A Guide to Dallas Shopping

In “Big D,” shopping isn’t merely a mundane chore necessary to outfit yourself, your kids, and your home. Shopping is a sport and a pastime, a social activity and entertainment. Dallasites don’t pull on sweats and go incognito to the mall; they get dolled up and strut their stuff.  The locals are world-class shoppers!

Dallas is home to the internationally recognized specialty store Neiman Marcus and is the site of America’s oldest planned shopping center Highland Park Village.

So if you’re a shopper, and come from a place less rich in retail mania, you’ve got your work cut out for you.  There are more shopping opportunities per capita in Dallas than any other city in the United States.

While most attendees of the NAHC 29th Annual Meeting & Exposition will concentrate their shopping energy within Grapevine, the site of the Annual Meeting, others will take advantage of their close proximity to the wonderful shopping that Dallas has to offer.

Great Shopping Areas

Highland Park Village

Opened in 1931, Highland Park Village is recognized as the first shopping center in America and the prototype for shopping centers across the country.  It has been designated a National Historic Landmark and represents a pivotal point in the evolution of the shopping center as a distinctive form of 20th century American architecture.  Internationally renowned shops like Chanel, Harry Winston, Ralph Lauren and Hermès, and Jimmy Choo to name just a few, create an atmosphere synonymous with style, charm and excellent customer service.

West Village

In the heart of Uptown lies a genuine in-town neighborhood named after the Manhattan neighborhood because stores and eateries are so close.  Comprised of an eclectic mix of boutiques as well as established retailers, West Village creates an urban like feel similar to SoHo in New York.  Enjoy treats from pizza to a wine bar, check out the five-screen Magnolia theater or visit a number of art galleries or night clubs. Cowboy Cool’s fashions are cool enough to stop in and check out the shop’s hip, urban take on western wear.  West Village is Dallas’ hip and trendy place to be.

Knox-Henderson Neighborhood

For a shopping excursion with an urban feel, discover a relaxing, fresh-air stroll all within minutes of downtown Dallas. Knox and Henderson streets and adjacent avenues provide three dozen-plus venues for retail eye candy, not to mention justification to crack open the piggy bank. Anchor stores Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware and Smith & Hawken, longtime neighbor Weir’s and others surround eclectic boutiques. It’s the perfect place to park your car and stroll from shop to shop - everything is within walking distance.

Grapevine Mills

Located just 3 miles or 5 minutes from the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center, there is over 1.6 million sq. ft. of shopping, entertainment and restaurants, at Grapevine Mills. With over 180 stores to choose from, such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Victoria’s Secret, Forever 21, Old Navy, Group USA, Oakley Vault, Ann Taylor Loft, Rainforest Cafe and Chili’s Too there is something for everyone no matter what your budget or style.

Historic Downtown Grapevine

Historic Downtown Grapevine is more than a destination, it’s a journey. A journey to bygone days when neighbors would call out to each other on the street, shake hands, say ”good morning” and really mean it.

You don’t have to be a Texan to appreciate downtown Grapevine. In fact, you’re likely to brush shoulders with East Coast bankers, Midwestern farmers or Hollywood elite as you explore the unique shops on Main Street or savor the grapes that gave our town its name. People from all over the country tell us Main Street reminds them of the town where they grew up. For some, it’s the historic Palace Theater and now home of the renowned Grapevine Opry.  For others, our family-style restaurants rekindle memories of good times.
